It was hardly a smooth ride but this summer when Aerosmith releases its first album since 2004, complimented by a nationwide tour that kicks off next month, it will mark over forty years together as a band. But man, have things been rocky recently; there’s always been tension between frontman Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry, but things came to a head in 2010 when, in response to Tyler signing as a judge on American Idol, Perry described the talent show as “one step above [Teenage Mutant] Ninja Turtles.” However, just last month Perry was on the Idol stage to wish Tyler a happy birthday and perhaps signal that yes, things were smoothed over and that dudes were ready to rock once more. So in honor of the grand return of Aerosmith — which also includes drummer Joey Kramer and guitarist Brad Whitford — as well as next week’s season finale of Idol, we’ve decided to honor the time-tested legends for this edition of Flashback Friday.

Blink-182 has a special gift. No, we’re not talking about making catchy pop-punk songs — even though, yah, Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker have that skill down pat. Rather, the SoCal punk-lifers have the innate ability to make their listeners feel young again — no matter how old, tired and worn down a person might be. With their domination of the pop airwaves in the late-90’s and early-2000’s they cemented themselves as music-industry icons. And then, after a lengthy hiatus in the mid-2000’s, it was with massive fanfare that they reunited in 2009. Sadly, we learned yesterday that Blink-182 was forced to cancel their previously-scheduled headlining performance at this year’s Bamboozle festival (they were replaced by My Chemical Romance). But this gives us even more reason to revisit the Blink boys for this edition of Flashback Friday!

It’s not often that you put Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson and Phil Collins in the same sentence. But guess what? Like the other two legends in this epic trio, Collins has sold over 100 million albums worldwide both as a solo artist and a member of a band. Yup, the English singer-songwriter, who rose to stardom in the 70’s as the drummer/vocalist of prog-rock icon Genesis, and then parlayed his success into a mega solo career, is in a truly elite class. So in honor of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer releasing deluxe reissues of his 1989 solo album, But Seriously — which amazingly was released as a 24-Karat Gold CD — we’re honoring Phil Collins for this edition of Flashback Friday.

Since emerging as the frontman of The White Stripes, a Detroit duo that paired him with his then-supposed sister — but actual wife — Meg, Jack White has guided his career with one rule in mind: continue indulging my creative fancy. The Stripes exploded out of the gate with a blitzkrieg of noise on their self-titled debut, and followed it up with a handful of equally spectacular releases. Soon, other White-led bands (The Ranconteurs and The Dead Weather) would emerge, as would other notable collaborations (Loretta Lynn, Wanda Jackson). But it was’t until week that White finally released his first solo effort. And Blunderbuss is utterly engaging; it finds White at his usually-charming self, mixing in old-school rock grit with traditional bluesy undertones. To honor his first solo release, this edition of Flashback Friday, we’re revisiting some of Jack White’s most glorious moments on his path to rock greatness.

We’ll allow that it likely seems as though we have crushes on every celebrity — we kinda do! However, Jason Statham is special. He’s got the cute accent, he plays a great tough guy, and he gets all the prettiest girls in town. What’s not to like? Not that it doesn’t look like a classic in the making, but the only reason we’d rush to theaters to see Safe is so we can oogle Mr. Statham for a couple of hours.
